A sheepuff is a common passive mob and a source of wool and mutton.

Spawning

Sheepuff spawn above aether grass blocks with a light level above 8 in groups of 3-4 adult sheepuff during world generation. As with pink sheep in vanilla Minecraft, white sheepuff have a 1 in 500 chance (0.2%) to spawn as purple sheepuff, making purple the rarest naturally spawned color.

The color of a sheep is determined according to the values below.

Color Chance Percent
Total - 100%
White 82⁄100 × 499⁄500 81.84%
Purple 82⁄100 × 1⁄500 0.164%
Cyan 5⁄100 5%
Light Blue 5⁄100 5%
Lime 5⁄100 5%
Pink 3⁄100 3%

If a monster spawner is set to spawn sheepuff, the sheepuff model spinning inside appears with one of the six naturally spawning colors. Independently from the displayed color, all six variants are able to spawn, the usual chances apply. To guarantee that sheepuff always spawn with the desired color, additional NBT tags can be applied to the monster spawner, utilizing the Color tag.

Drops

Breeding

Upon successful breeding, 1-7 experience is dropped.

On death

Item Roll Chance Quantity (Roll Chance)
Default Looting I Looting II Looting III
Raw Mutton[1] 100% 1-2 1-3 1-4 1-5
Wool[2] 100% [3] 1 1 1 1
  1. Dropped as Cooked Mutton if on fire when killed.
  2. Color of dropped wool corresponds to color of sheepuff.
  3. A fully sheared sheepuff does not drop wool when killed.

1–3 experience is dropped when sheepuff are killed by a player or a tamed wolf.

Killing a baby sheepuff yields no items or experience.

Shearing

When sheared, sheepuff give 1-3 wool and do not take any damage. This is not affected by Fortune or Looting. A puffed up sheepuff can be sheared twice, dropping 1-3 wool per shearing.

Behavior

Sheepuff wander aimlessly or in small flocks of two to four, bleating randomly. They avoid cliffs and hazardous areas if it warrants damage. If harmed, sheepuff bleat and flee for a few seconds. Unlike vanilla sheep, wolves do not attempt to attack them.

Like most other Aether passive mobs, sheepuff follow a player holding blue berries within a 10 block radius. Adult sheepuff cannot fit through a gap between diagonal fences, unlike players.

Sheepuff graze Aether grass blocks and short grass (but not tall grass), changing them into dirt blocks or making them disappear, respectively. They can eat grass through blocks that are lower than a full block, including extremities such as honey blocks, as well as from inside minecarts. Baby sheepuff graze more often and mature 1 minute faster after grazing. If an adult sheepuff has the opportunity, the chance of eating grass is 1⁄1000 every other game tick (1⁄50 for baby sheepuff). A sheared sheepuff regrows its wool after grazing, therefore, a sheepuff cannot regrow its wool if no short grass or Aether grass blocks are available. If /gamerule mobGriefing is set to false, Aether grass blocks and short grass remain, but the sheepuff still regrow their wool.

Sheepuff (both baby and adults) with wool puff up after eating grass twice, and their fleece becomes significantly wider. Puffed up sheepuff jump significantly higher, fall slowly, and can be sheared once to un-puff them or twice to fully shear them. They do not actually gain fall damage immunity, so shearing them midair will hurt them when they land.

Dyeing

All Sheepuff Colors.png

Sheepuff wool can be dyed by pressing the use key while holding any dye, however, sheared sheepuff cannot be dyed until their wool grows back. Dyeing changes the color of the sheepuff's wool permanently or until the sheepuff is dyed again. The new wool colors are inherited by baby sheepuff.

A sheepuff retains its dyed wool color if it is dyed and then sheared. The wool patches on a sheared sheepuff always appear white regardless of their actual color.

Breeding

A baby sheepuff inheriting a mix of its parent's colors.

Shepuff can be bred using blue berries, after which they spawn a baby sheepuff. They cannot breed for five mintues after the baby sheepuff appears.

If the parents have compatible wool colors (meaning that the corresponding dye items could be combined into a third dye color), the resulting baby sheepuff inherit a mix of their colors. If the dye colors cannot normally be mixed, the baby sheepuff will inherit the color of one of the parents.

Baby sheepuff take 20 minutes to grow into an adult, which can be slightly accelerated using blue berries. Each use reduces the remaning time by 10%. It can also accelerate its own growth by eating grass.

Easter Eggs

If a sheepuff is named jeb_, its wool cycles through all dye colors. This is purely a visual effect, and any sheepuff named jeb_ can still be dyed without changing the rainbow effect and drops wool of the most recent color as if it was not named.
