The Aether (The Aether)
The Aether is a hostile, paradise-like dimension of floating islands high in the sky, where you can begin a new survival adventure packed with new ores, mythical creatures and perilous Dungeons.
Accessing
Aether Portal
To access the Aether, the player must construct an aether portal in the Overworld. To create the portal, the player must first build a rectangular glowstone frame, ranging in size from a minimum of 4 blocks × 5 blocks to a maximum of 23 blocks × 23 blocks. Once the frame is built, it can then be activated by placing water within the frame using a water bucket, melting a block of ice inside the frame, or using dispensers.
The portal functions much like a vanilla Minecraft nether portal, allowing most entities (with the exception of the wither, the ender dragon, and entities riding or being ridden by another entity) to be transported to a corresponding portal in the Aether. In Survival, the player must stand in an aether portal for 4 seconds to get to the Aether, and can step out of a portal before it completes its animation to abort the teleport. The portal plays a sound effect while the player is inside it. If there is no corresponding portal, a new 4×5 portal is created. The portal can be destroyed by breaking the glowstone frame, by a nearby explosion, or by placing lava into it with a bucket or dispenser in the overworld. Any of the blocks in the corners can be destroyed without destroying the portal.
If cheats are enabled, players can also teleport to the Aether without using an aether portal: the syntax is /execute in the_aether
.
Traits
Like the Overworld, the Aether is also horizontally infinite with a build limit of y-level 255.
Until the gold boss is defeated, it is always day in the Aether and there is no weather. After the gold boss is defeated, the Aether follows a daylight cycle. Daytime lasts 30 minutes as opposed to the Overworld's 10 minutes. Light otherwise functions exactly the same as it does in the Overworld.
Flora and fauna in the Aether share some similarities to the Overworld's. Several varieties of trees and flowers grow on the islands, along with berry bushes. There are also many passive and helpful mobs to be found in the Aether, just as there are also several hostile and potentially dangerous mobs too.
Locations in the Aether correspond to Overworld coordinates. Therefore, traveling one block in the Aether means traveling one block in the Overworld. For example, in a perfect scenario, a player who enters a portal in the Overworld at x=0, z=0 and travels in the Aether to x=1000, z=1000 returns to the Overworld at x=1000, z=1000.
Most items and blocks in the Aether function the same as they do in the Overworld, with a few notable exceptions:
- Certain vanilla light sources cannot be placed or be lit in the Aether. Normal torches and lanterns cannot be placed, a campfire or jack o' lantern will immediately be extinguished upon placing, and candles cannot be lit. Flint and steel and fire charges will not be able to set anything on fire except for soulsand, netherrack, and hellfire stone.
- Extinguishable light sources will emit black particles when they fail to be placed or lit.
- Soul torches, lanterns, and campfires work normally however.
- Unenchanted vanilla tools all mine equally fast as the player's fist, and are slower than Aether tools.
- Until the Gold Dungeon boss is defeated, beds cannot be slept in but can be used to set a new spawn point.
- Clocks are frozen to midday but the day-night cycle continues in the Overworld.
- There is no way to place lava in the Aether, except inside a cauldron.
- Using lava buckets produces aerogel, leaving the player with an empty bucket.
- Vanilla Grass blocks and leaves take on a blueish-green color.
Environment
The Aether features floating islands suspended over a void. The skybox contains a sun and a moon, but no clouds. Islands are mainly composed of aether grass, aether dirt, holystone, and quicksoil, alongside several ore blocks. Falling off of an island or flying below y level 0 will teleport the player to the Overworld at the same x- and y-coordinates.
Biomes
The Aether is generally considered to be its own biome, although there are technically 4 with different tree distributions.
Generated structures
The Aether contains a few unique generated structures. All dungeons contain loot of differing rarity and power useful for progression.
Name | Description | Image |
---|---|---|
Bronze Dungeon | The Bronze Dungeon is a large, labyrinth-like structure composed of carved stone and sentry stone. This structure is often found inside of large islands with only the entrance being exposed to the air. It is inhabited by sentries, mimics, and the Bronze Dungeon boss, the Slider. | ![]() |
Silver Dungeon | The Silver Dungeon generates as a very large structure similar to a classical greek temple seated on a mass of holystone, mossy holystone, and cold aerclouds. It is composed of angelic stone, light angelic stone, pillars, and pillar tops and can usually be found suspended high up in the air. Valkyries, mimics, and the dungeon boss--the Valkyrie Queen-- inhabit the Silver Dungeon. | ![]() |
Gold Dungeon | The Gold Dungeon consists of a large, spherical floating island with many golden oak trees growing on it and a single entrance leading directly to the boss room inside. In addition to the blocks it shares with other island generation, it is composed of hellfire stone, light hellfire stone, and Netherrack. The Sun Spirit is the sole inhabitant of the dungeon. | ![]() |
Ruined Aether Portal (Ruined Portals Datapack Only) |
A structure containing what appears to be a destroyed aether portal and various types of stone brick or holystone brick materials, when generating in the Overworld or the Aether, respectively. Aether Grass Blocks, purple flowers, and white flowers generate on the ground around the portal, and a chest containing loot generates with the structure.
These structures can be found in many Overworld biomes and in the Aether. |

Terrain features
The Aether has a lot of different terrain features that generate within the biomes of the Aether.
Mobs
The Aether is inhabited by its own share of mobs, most of which are immune to fall damage.
Other Overworld mobs do not naturally spawn in the Nether but can be teleported through portals (with the exception of withers and ender dragons).

Trivia
- The Aether is an inverse to The Nether, with the Aether being large solid areas in empty space while The Nether is empty space in large solid areas.
- According to the original developer Brandon Pearce, fire cannot normally be created in the dimension due to the oxygen level being too low[1].
